Cambridge Preparation for the TOEFL Test (Book & CD-ROM) Reviews
The Cambridge Preparation for the TOEFL Test is the best TOEFL resource that I have ever used. The good thing about this resource is that the questions and materials in it are very much similar to the actual TOEFL test. There are 7 sets of simulated tests that can be practiced repeatedly. The questions get difficult from set to set, which gives a sense of challenge for the test taker. Another good thing about this resource is that the user interface of the software is better compared to other TOEFL test simulation software. It is also easy to understand and easy to use.
Overall, I think it is the best TOEFL test simulation software available in the market. I would definitely recommend it to test takers who wants to practice answering TOEFL questions.
Cambridge Preparation for the TOEFL Test is a very good self-practice book for advance users of English who intend to take Internet-based TOEFL test, as it offers tricks to the test structure of the TOEFL iBT. It also has in-depth practice at the end of every lesson.
However, this book is going to be too complicated for beginner to intermediate English language users as it does not deeply discuss basic knowledge of English such as grammar and vocabulary.
Nevertheless, this textbook is ideal for final preparation so users can get the big picture of what they have to prepare before taking the real test to get a high score.
This book is suitable for people who want to get 100 or higher. The grammar in the reading is excellent and it requires a very good command of English comprehension. The questions about vocabularies are difficult, you can't just guess. The listening section is the same as the actual test. You need to practice this book at least 2 times to optimize its value.
My favorite practice resource. I have done everything from the Cambridge TOEFL Guide and I can say with complete honesty that it is the best resource I have encountered for the TOEFL. The information is presented neatly, a couple helpful little tips and tricks but what really caught my eye were the tests.
The tests that are on the CD which you get with the book are just so amazing ? they are way more difficult than the exam itself (e.g. on some of the tests I got a 23 points on a Reading and on the actual TOEFL I got 30 points), they make you focus because sometimes only 1 word has been changed and this changes the whole answer. Furthermore, some of the exercises really made you think with your brain not just scan through the text to find the answer (in a Reading, for instance).
This test is not for everyone. Some people feel happy when they achieve a score of 60 or 70 pts. This book is for those rare individuals who aim for results above 90 pts. This test will give you a real run for your money but in the end you would handle the real TOEFL exam no problem at all. The only thing that I would like to see from the Cambridge test makers is a new and revised version of this book including even more tests.
If you have decided that a mediocre result just won't cut it for you, then this is the practice resource that I would recommend.
